THE TUNNEL OF HOPE

During the Siege of Sarajevo between 1992 and 1995, Sarajevo was completely cut off by the Serb forces encircling the city. So the army of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bosnian volunteers secretly dug an underground tunnel connecting the city and the UN-controlled area near Sarajevo International Airport. At the time, the hand-dug tunnel, known as the Tunnel of Hope, was the only way the people of Sarajevo could access the outside world, and it allowed them to bring food, oil and other humanitarian aid into the city. Today, part of the tunnel has been turned into a museum where you can experience how the citizens of Sarajevo endured the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare.

1992年から95年までのサラエヴォ包囲の間、サラエヴォは街を包囲するセルビア勢力によって完全に孤立させられていた。そこでボスニア・ヘルツェゴビナ軍とボスニア側のボランティアは、サラエヴォ国際空港近くの国連が管理する地域と街を結ぶ地下トンネルを秘密裏に掘った。「希望のトンネル」と呼ばれるこの手掘りのトンネルは当時、サラエヴォ市民が外界とアクセスできる唯一の手段で、食料や燃料や様々な人道的救援物資がここを通過して街へ持ち込まれたらしい。今トンネルの一部はミュージアムになっていて、近代戦史上、首都に対するものとしては最も長期に渡った都市包囲を、サラエヴォ市民がどう耐えてきたのかをその目で見ることができる。

Above the tunnel, there is an active runway of Sarajevo International. During the siege, the airport was under the UN control.
