JAJCE BARRACKS

I spotted this fortress-like building on a prominent location on the hill from a gondola of the Sarajevo Cable Car and immediately felt that I had to see it. So I climbed up an insanely steep slope on foot to approach it. This ruin is the Jajce Barracks, built in 1914 for the Austro-Hungarian Army and later used as a military hospital. It was heavily damaged during the Bosnian War started in 1992 and has been completely abandoned since then. It is in a sad state now, but I can still imagine the beauty of the original architecture.

丘の上の絶好の場所に立つ要塞のような建物がサラエヴォケーブルカーのゴンドラの中から目に入ったとき、「ここは見ておかないと」と感じた。そこで、とんでもない急坂を徒歩で登って近づいてみた。ヤイツェバラックと呼ばれるこの廃墟は1914年に作られたオーストリア・ハンガリー帝国軍の施設で、軍の病院としても使われていたらしい。92年に勃発したボスニア・ヘルツェゴビナ紛争で酷く破壊され、それからはずっと放置されてきた。今の状態は痛々しいが、もともとはかなり壮麗な建築だったことが見てとれる。
