This hotel, with its unique modernist Yugo architecture and breathtaking atrium, has quite an unusual history. It was originally opened as a Holiday Inn for the
1984 Winter Olympics. When the Siege of Sarajevo by Bosnian Serb forces began in 1992, the hotel's location suddenly became the front line of a war called "Sniper Alley". And many international journalists stayed at the Holiday Inn, turning their rooms into a bureau to cover the conflict. Although the hotel was hit countless times, it didn't give up its operation during the siege, providing food and shelter to foreign correspondents. It is said that the hotel staff served the guests in their jackets and ties while their workplace was under fierce attack. The hotel in yellow, which symbolizes the perseverance of the city of Sarajevo and its people, is now operating under the new name: Hotel Holiday. Their copy says
"Olympic spirit of Sarajevo in the 21st century". Yes, but you guys had a lot in between.

1984年の冬季オリンピックのためにホリデイ・インとしてオープンしたのだが、1992年にセルビア人勢力がサラエヴォ包囲を始めると、いきなり目の前が「スナイパー通り」と呼ばれる戦争の最前線になってしまう。外国から来たジャーナリストたちの多くはここに滞在し、自分たちの部屋を紛争を伝えるための支局に変えた。サラエヴォ包囲の間、数えきれないほどの砲撃を受けたにもかかわらず、ホリデイ・インは営業をやめず、特派員たちに食事とシェルターを提供し続けていく。自分の職場が激しい攻撃にさらされている最中も、ホテルのスタッフはジャケットとタイを身につけてサービスをしていたと言われている。サラエヴォの街とそこに生きる人々の不屈の精神を象徴する黄色いホテルは、ホテルホリデーに名前を変え、現在もしっかり営業中。
「21世紀に続く、サラエヴォのオリンピックスピリット」というのがホテルのキャッチコピーなのだが、その間に本当にいろいろありましたよね。
