A FOOT OF THE BRIDGE THAT MADE THE 20TH CENTURY

If you are in Sarajevo for the first time, you may have to come here first. On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were assassinated by a Bosnian Serb student at the foot of this Latin Bridge over the Miljacka River (the approximate location of the assassination is near the salmon pink building). That triggered World War I, and the rest is history. I had a misperception that the assassination happened on the bridge, but it actually didn't. 

サラエボに初めて来たのなら、まずはここを見ないわけにはいかない。1914年6月28日、オーストリアの太公、フランツ・フェルディナントと妻のゾフィーが、ミリャツカ川にかかるこのラテン橋のたもとでボスニア系セルビア人の学生によって暗殺された（実際の現場はサーモンピンク色の建物のそば）。これがきっかけなって第一次世界大戦が始まり、その後の歴史につながっていくのはご存じの通り。暗殺は橋の上で起きたとずっと思い込んでいたが、実際は違った。
