METROPOL PALACE HOTEL BELGRADE PART1
This hotel was originally built in 1957, during the Tito era, as Hotel Metropol and became an important venue for Yugoslav diplomacy. In 1987, two North Korean agents, Kim Hyon-hui and Kim Seung-il, received a time bomb from their colleagues in the room of this hotel. They later flew to Baghdad to get on board Korean Air Flight 858, operated by the Boeing 707. Then, the spies left the explosives in the overhead bin in the cabin of Flight 858 and disembarked in Abu Dhabi. The bomb eventually exploded before the flight made a stopover in Bangkok, bringing the plane down into the Andaman Sea. Metropol is filled with the memories of the Socialist Balkans. And I couldn’t resist choosing it for my second visit to Belgrade.
