VILLA CORA: CHECK-IN

A lavish 1860s residence has become my home in Florence during this trip. Villa Cora, which has breathtaking salons and halls, was originally built as Villa Oppenheim, and it was a gift from Baron Gustave Oppenheim, a leading figure in banking and finance at the time, to his bride. Later, when the Baron discovered his wife's unfaithfulness, he set fire to the residence and it was eventually abandoned. At the end of the 19th century, the villa was bought by the widow of Napoleon III, Empress Eugenié, and passed to Egidio Cora, the father of a famous Italian diplomat. They say that the Japanese Emperor Akihito stayed here in the 1990s. It is now a five-star plus L hotel with a spa and an upscale restaurant.

今回のフローレンス訪問では、1860年代に建てられた煌びやかな邸宅が僕の家になる。息をのむようなサロンとホールを持つヴィラ・コラはもともとヴィラ・オッペンハイムと呼ばれ、銀行業と金融の大物であるグスターヴ・オッペンハイム男爵が自分の新婦へ贈ったギフトだった。しかし、のちに妻の不貞に気づいた男爵によって火がつけられ、廃墟になってしまう。19世紀末になるとナポレオン3世の未亡人、ウジェニー皇后がこの場所を購入し、次に著名なイタリアの外交官の父親であるエジディオ・コラに受け継がれた。1990年代には日本の平成天皇もここに滞在したらしい。今はスパとアップスケールなレストランを持つ、5スター・プラスLのホテルになっている。
