111

On the Japanese rails, the number 111 is as iconic as the number 747 in the sky. The original 111 series EMU was introduced in the early '60s for JNR's suburban network around the Tokyo metropolitan area. When I was a child and teenager, the 111 series and its enhanced version, the 113 series, were the main workhorses on the Tokaido and Yokosuka Lines, and I took them almost every week to visit my grandparents living near Kamakura. Today, I was lucky enough to be able to ride one of the remaining 111s, operated as part of the 113 series, from Onomichi Station on the Sanyo Main Line.

日本の線路の上で111という番号は、空の上での747と同じくらいアイコニックな番号として知られている。111系電車の原型は60年代初期、国鉄の首都圏近郊路線向けに導入された。僕の子ども時代から十代の頃にかけては、111系とその強化型である113系が東海道線と横須賀線の主力車両として使われており、当時鎌倉の近くに住んでいた祖父母を訪ねるため、ほとんど毎週のように乗っていたことを思い出す。今日はラッキーなことに、山陽本線で113系編成の一部として運用されている最後の111の一つに尾道駅から乗ることができた。
