MARUFUKURO: CHECK-IN

I checked into Marufukuro, which is just a few months old, ticking one hotel off my Kyoto bucket list. This boutique hotel, run by Plan Do See—the hotel operator whose portfolio includes The Aoyama Grand Hotel in Tokyo, is converted from the original Nintendo headquarters office and warehouse buildings along with the residence of the Yamauchi family—the founder of Nintendo. They carefully kept the atmosphere of the historic 1930s building but never compromised on the functionality of the room. So my room on the top floor of the former office building comes with a full-sized Japanese-style bathroom and an oversized closet. The room has views of a residential area that once was a red-light district.

任天堂の旧本社社屋と、倉庫と、任天堂の創業家である山内家の邸宅をリノベしてブティックホテルにしたと聞けば、京都で一番気になるホテルの一つになるのは当然。そこで早速チェックインしてみた。この丸福樓は、東京の青山グランドホテルをはじめとするプロパティを運営しているPlan Do Seeが、ほんの数か月前にオープンさせたばかり。1930年代の歴史ある建物のムードをしっかり残しながら、部屋の機能性には決して妥協していない。だから僕がもらった旧事務所棟の最上階にあるコーナールームには、フルサイズの日本式バスルームと、かなりしっかりとした大きさのワードローブがついている。窓越しに見える住宅街は、かつて遊郭エリアだった。
