GALLERIA MIDOBARU: CHECK-IN

This 1yo new art-themed hotel is the reason why I came all the way to the hot spring area in Beppu. The architecture is by the Beppu-based local architectural design company DABURA.m, and graf, a creative unit from Osaka, designed furnitures and signage. The room is simple and functional—similar to the one at SOKI in Atami—and it comes with a spacious balcony overlooking Beppu Bay. The best feature of the room is a half-open-air private hot spring bathtub with a traditional wooden lid. Thanks to it, I can have the luxury to enjoy both a great sea view and one of the best onsen water in Japan at the same time.

アートをテーマにした、オープンして1年の新しいこのホテルが今回はるばる別府の温泉郷まで来た理由。建築を担当したのは地元別府の建築デザイン会社DABURA.m。家具とサイネージのデザインは大阪のクリエイティブユニットgraf。部屋には別府湾を見晴らす広めのバルコニーがついていて、シンプルで実用的なインテリアは、ちょっと熱海のSOKIに似た感じがする。そして部屋の目玉は、伝統的な木製の蓋を持った半露天のプライベート温泉バスタブ。これがついているおかげで、日本で最高の温泉の一つに入りながら同時に見事なシービューが楽しめる。
