Dai Nippon Printing, one of the largest printing companies in Japan, opened a new museum in my neighborhood. It's called
Ichigaya Letterpress Factory and features the method and history of letterpress printing. To create the museum, they restored their 1926 factory office building to its original state. So I was excited to see that a 1920s style modern architecture with a charming clock tower suddenly appeared, as if it were a newly built building, in the city which keeps demolishing beautiful pre-war buildings. The inside is filled with metal movable types and traditional letterpress machines. Having a small cafe is a nice bonus.

「市谷の杜 本と活字館」を我が家の近所にオープンさせた。ミュージアムが入っているのは1926年に建てられた印刷工場の事務所棟で、建築当初の姿にレストアされている。戦前の美しい建物を破壊し続ける都市に、チャーミングな時計台がついた1920年代スタイルの近代建築があたかも新築のように現れたのでかなりわくわくした。館内は金属活字や伝統的な活版印刷の機械でいっぱい。小さなカフェがついているのも良い。
