I'm checking into Suiran, a new Starwood hotel in Arashiyama and the first hotel in Japan under the Luxury Collection brand. There used to be a Japanese
ryokan called Rantei on this site and I occasionally stayed there with my parents when I was a child. So I feel like I came back here for the first time in decades. On the premises, there are two historic buildings - Enmeikaku and Hasshoken - that were considered the icons of Rantei at the time. These buildings, both more than a century old, were preserved, renovated, and taken over by Suiran.
今回滞在するのは、嵐山にできた新しいスターウッドのホテル「翠嵐」。日本で初めてのラグジュアリーコレクションブランドのホテルでもある。かつてこの場所には、子どもの頃しばしば親に連れられて泊まりに来ていた「嵐亭」という旅館があった。だからここへは数十年ぶりに帰ってきた感じになる。敷地の中には嵐亭を象徴する存在だった歴史ある建物「延命閣」と「八賞軒」が建っているが、どちらも築100年を超すこの二棟は保存、改修され、翠嵐に引き継がれた。
