IRORI ISHINOMAKI

When Akio, my friend and one of the key members of Ishinomaki 2.0, asked me to come up with a name for a Wi-Fi-equipped shared office/cafe space in Ishinomaki run by his team, I immediately thought about the Japanese fireplace "irori". The irori is especially iconic for the traditional houses in Tohoku region which have severe winters. It is a place for family gathering where they talk, eat, and exchange their stories. Our name should be modern and have a context unique to post-311 Ishinomaki, so I found "IRORI" can be read as "Interaction Room of Revitalization and Innovation". Its symmetric spelling could be a bonus for the logo design. I hope "IRORI Ishinomaki" would be a new generation of irori where people from around the world get together exchanging their ideas and stories to create the visions for the future of Ishinomaki City and beyond.

友人であり、石巻2.0のキーメンバーの一人であるアキオに、彼らが石巻で運営するWi-Fi完備のシェアオフィス&カフェのネーミングを依頼された時、真っ先に思い出したのは囲炉裏だった。冬が厳しい東北地方の伝統的な家屋にとって象徴のような存在であり、家族みんなが集まり、おしゃべりや食事をして、物語を伝えていく場所。それが、囲炉裏。このネーミングには現代的な文脈や、ポスト311の石巻ならでは意味付けも大切だと思ったので、IRORIに「Interaction Room of Revitalization and Innovation（再生と革新のための交流の部屋）」という別の読み方も与えてみた。シンメトリーになるスペリングは、ロゴを開発する時にちょっとしたおまけになる。世界から人々が集い、アイデアと物語が交わされ、石巻の未来だけに留まらず様々な未来に広がっていく革新的なビジョンが生まれる「新しい時代の囲炉裏」になって欲しい。「IRORI石巻」という名前には、そんな願いを込めている。

Amazingly, they installed a real irori in IRORI. This biz cafe has now become a popular local joint where people work, have events, play music, chill out, and ignite the possibilities of the community.

驚いたことにIRORIには本物の囲炉裏も作られていた。すでに地元の人気スポットとなったこのビズカフェでは、様々な人が仕事をしたり、イベントを開いたり、ライブをやったり、ただ何となく集まったりして、コミュニティの可能性に火をつけている。
