AN UNDERGROUND AIRCRAFT FACTORY

While driving in Saitama Prefecture, I happened to stop at the ruins of Yoshimi Hyakketsu (One Hundred Holes in Yoshimi), where the Nakajima Aircraft Company, Asia's largest aircraft manufacturer in the World War II era and the predecessor of Subaru, built an underground wartime aircraft factory. Now you can walk around some of their tunnels. In this bomb shelter they built parts for warbirds.

埼玉をドライブ中、偶然「吉見百穴」の遺跡を通りかかる。ここは、第二次大戦中アジア最大の航空機メーカーで現在のスバルの前身、中島飛行機が戦時中に航空機の地下工場を持っていた場所。今でもそのトンネルの一部を歩くことができる。空爆を避けるためのこの工場で、航空機の部品が作られていた。

Above the shelter, there are countless grave holes of ancient people, which is the reason for the name "One Hundred Holes". Ancient human footsteps and a doomed warbird factory are such an ironic combination.

地下工場の上は、「百穴」の名の由来になった数えきれないほどの古代人の墳墓の穴。古代の人間の足跡と、絶望的な戦時の航空機工場。皮肉な組み合わせ。
